But what Daniel wants the most is to spend time with his children. However, his ex-wife won’t let him see them until he gets his life together. So he did the most sensible thing (i.e., finding a job). But instead of finding a job in his life of business, Daniel decided to apply as a babysitter for his kids as Mrs. Doubtfire! With the help of his friends in special effects, Daniel donned prosthetics and a suit to make him look like an old classy, Scottish woman named Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire. Her arrival in the Hillard household was a godsend for the ultra-busy ex-wife. But things take a turn when one of Daniel’s children discovers Mrs. Doubtfire’s true identity. This musical is a surefire hit that theater lovers in Tennessee will adore. The musical gained the praise of both viewers and critics upon its initial Broadway run. “It’s loud, it’s bright, it looks expensive, it has big energy, belly laughs, tunes and tears, plus characters to root for, adorable kids, a truly unforgettable central performance,” says the writer from What’s On Stage. The writer continued that the musical stresses the importance of family, “This theatrical equivalent to comfort food, that sends you out with a big grin on your face and a warmth in your heart, is a pretty appealing place to be.”
Meanwhile, the New York Stage Review praised showmakers Kirkpatrick and Fareel for updating the storyline to the modern times. “(They) update things to account for changing tolerance for jokes about men wearing dresses and gay people being outrageous makeup artists. The script doesn’t rise to the dizzying goofiness of Something Rotten!, but it’s still very funny.”
Over at the New York Daily News, Mrs. Doubtfire was described as “a good time for all ages.” The writer added that it “is exactly what the audience-friendly, warm-centered, modestly scaled “Mrs. Doubtfire” delivers.”
Lastly, Theatrely was quick to commend the performance of Rob McClure, “Where the show truly shines is with the fantastic company that director Jerry Zaks has assembled. Rob McClure is a theatrical force to be reckoned with.” He praised McClure’s ability to seamlessly transition back and forth between Daniel and Mrs. Doubtfire. “McClure is giving a career-defining performance that would surely make Robin Williams proud.”
