A story of difficult love between an unlikely pair, Moulin Rouge! The Musical shares with us a classical tale of romance in the equally passionate locale of Paris, France. In the underbelly of Montmartre, Christian, a traveling writer who journeys in Montmartre with nothing but hope in his heart, encounters the most beautiful woman he has seen and star performer, Satine, in the famous club Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another wealthy benefactor sets his target on Satine as his prize.
Created as an offshoot that was created more than 10 years after the 2001 motion picture, this musical's early challenge was to present an unfamiliar setting to a new generation. The genius stroke of the production, just like the 2001 movie, was to present the secret romantic affair with unexpectedly new renditions of anachronistic popular numbers. The obvious solution was to expand the musical numbers and truly turn it into a “a creative peek into the 1900s”, as the production team call it. The outcome, as seen on the live stage, was an enormous collection of unforgettable medleys, mash-ups, and arrangements. Though the musical keeps several of the 2001 movie's favorite songs including Lady Marmalade, the Broadway show now has pop hits from the current times including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic performed in unique arrangements.
