& Juliet - Musical

Regarded as one of the finest musicals from London, the reimagining of Shakespeare’s classic, & Juliet, is appearing in Tennessee on Thursday 13th February 2025, for a limited period and shall be produced in Tennessee Performing Arts Center of Nashville. Literally altering the fate in Romeo & Juliet’s ending through the perspective of Shakespeare and his spouse, Hathaway, the ongoing run of this musical is a fresh reimagining of Juliet’s life if she had decided not to commit suicide.

‘& Juliet’ presents a predominantly all-female cast of characters, who compared to their personalities in the late classic, finally find their independence in their journey together across Paris. By fully maximizing pop music, colorful outfits, and a revamped script, the modern play is aptly able to give weight to the evolution of feminism as seen in today's age and shows it through an entertaining play.

Moving away from the original storyline of Shakespeare's creation which was presented live around forty decades earlier, fans have discerned the considerable changes which were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more recent musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original narrative revolves around the tragedy that transpires because of rash decision-making and the blind passion of two lovers, which results in the suicide of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic events and instead embraces a more positive outlook by focusing on the limitless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her team of friends, who journey to Paris to find their identities not just as individuals, but as powerful women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s narrative and alters the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while introducing new and equally strong women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent generations, that express the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the leading ladies throughout the musical. Even the clothing worn by the play’s leading ladies give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while highlighting the contrast between the ongoing production and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan clothing and iconography with today’s clothing styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to promote empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
