Fanny Brice's voyage from being a tender, uninspired, stage-shy young girl to becoming a national star is recounted in the musical, Funny Girl. It is based on the happenings in her life that occurred just before, during, and after World War I. Her tale begins in her early years in the Lower East Side of New York City, where the young teenager clowns her way through burlesque and vaudeville while hoping to make it big despite being discouraged by her family and friends who say she is not talented enough to be a star on stage. It also tells the story of her relations with Nick Arnstein, a charming local whose pull Fanny finds fetching, as well as the eventual failure of their marriage.
