“Passion, darkness, love and hope leap to life with Nashville Ballet’s stellar production!” – Nashville Parent
Nashville Ballet is definitely no greenhorn in producing quality performances. The ballet company was formally founded in 1986 —although its inception can be traced back to the mid-1970s— and has remained to be one of Tennesee’s top-tier dance companies. It is comprised of 32 professional dancers from around the world who perform in all mainstage productions during the ensemble’s performance season. With an average of five to seven annual mainstage performances, Nashville Ballet established itself to be the standard of ballet on this side of the world. Although the company has its own building (the Martin Center), Nashville Ballet has become a regular performer in downtown Nashville’s Tennessee Performing Arts Center.
Over the years, the famous performing arts center became witness to countless sold-out and world-class performances, such as “The Nutcracker,” “Lucy Negro Redux,” “Cinderella,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “Attitude/Other Voices,” among countless others. These productions showed the versatility of the ballet ensemble and how the dancers and choreographers work hand-in-hand to present a varied repertoire of classical ballet and boundary-pushing contemporary works.
With the mission to “create, perform, teach, and promote dance as an essential and inspiring element of the community,” Nashville Ballet has dedicated its time to honing the skills of young talents. Aside from traveling throughout Middle Tennessee schools, parks, libraries, and community centers to introduce the beauty of ballet, Nashville Ballet also has a formal school for students who want to learn ballet. With the leadership of artistic director Nick Mullikin, the outstanding faculty and artistic staff of the School of Nashville Ballet offers the highest quality training for children and adults of all ages.
This 2024, Nashville Ballet is bringing some of the beloved productions that made people fall in love with classical and contemporary ballet. First on the list is “Attitude,” which will be shown from February 9 to 11. The production is a fan favorite as it features groundbreaking choreography, original music, and cross-disciplinary collaborations. As stated on the official website of Nashville Ballet, Attitude will feature three world-premiere works by resident choreographers Mollie Sansone, Jermaine Spivey, and Yusha-Marie Sorzano. With the music to be performed by local Nashville musicians, the production will tackle contemporary issues presented in the art of ballet. Like the previous years when it was shown, the production is sure to challenge societal norms and pose critical questions that will challenge the audience members.

This famous tale of the unrequited love from William Shakespeare has been the subject of many ballet adaptations — and Nashville Ballet’s rendition is one of the most sought-after in the world of ballet. Romeo and Juliet, adapted by Vasterling from one of the most renowned love stories in the world, transports viewers on a mesmerizing journey of forbidden love and the passionate romance of mortal enemies Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. This enduring, grand-scale stage play transports viewers to the streets of enchanting Verona as Bard’s famed tragedy takes place, complete with thrilling battle scenes and elaborate period costumes. Catch this timeless tale from April 20 to 21.
“The marriage of the dancers’ emotive technique to a score dense with meaning, wrapped in beautifully crafted lighting plan and set design leaves the Nashville Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet a voice to speak for itself.” – Music City Review
