Set in the Bohemian period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The play can be found in and is all about the happenings of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, named the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 19th century, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became renowned for its French Cabaret cultural aspect – ecstatic, loose, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian entertainment venue that the staging was inspired by also impacted the creative team, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's team mentioning that they did directly borrow from the late 1900s time period, and it can assuredly be viewed in the performance. The decor, costumes, music score, and song and dance numbers (which features a lot of can-can dance) all obviously are a clear inspiration from to the film version of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and during the peak of France's La Belle Époque, a period pointed to as the height of lasting peace and harmony, where the romantic affair of two lovers take place. Christian, an American writer who moves to Paris seeking a successful career, meets Satine, the best entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite the imminent danger of their relationship, fall deeply in love and settle for a hidden relationship with each other because of their uncontrollable feelings.

Depending on perspective, the period of La Belle Époque was denounced by even locals not as a time of cultural and artistic development. Historians believe that this time period were all about rising tension beneath the surface. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, however, chose to showcase the era in a more endearing perspective by highlighting the romantic Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the show.

In more recent years, viewers and audiences have the opportunity to relive the show most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be showing at an equally lively and epic venue, Tennessee Performing Arts Center. With interior decor just as beautiful as the set that it is staging, Tennessee Performing Arts Center is the best fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited season on Saturday 19th October 2024.
