Moulin Rouge - The Musical

Gear up for what The Guardian calls “beautifully crafted” as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be coming to you for a limited season in Tennessee, produced only in Nashville at Tennessee Performing Arts Center this fall. Fall in love with 19th century Paris as it comes to your city and find out why Moulin Rouge is one of the top Broadway plays of all time this coming October.

Hand in hand with Baz Luhrmann, the creator of the original movie produced in 2001, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a Broadway version of the said movie. Also following the tale of Christian and Satine and their developing romance, the plot is performed on a visually stunning stage accurate for its late 19th century timeline, while augmenting its song list to not only include the original music from Baz Luhrmann's film, but also mash-ups and medleys of new songs that were not available when the original picture was shown.

Loved by viewers as one of the ultimate performances from Broadway, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is only available for a limited period at Tennessee Performing Arts Center. Make sure you’re able to secure your tickets and buy your tickets while available for this Friday 11th October 2024 showing!

Set in the cultural period during the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The show can be found in and is centered around the events of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, called the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the late 19th century, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became famous for its French Cabaret cultural aspect – ecstatic, free-spirited, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian venue that the staging was created from also influenced the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creators saying that they did directly borrow from the actual Bohemian time period, and it can decisively be viewed in the show. The decor, clothing, classical renditions, and choreography (which sees a lot of can-can dance) all evidently pay homage to to the original Moulin Rouge.

It is in this decade of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of France's La Belle Époque, a time considered to be the height of beauty and spreading artistry, where the forbidden affair of two lovers finally begins. Christian, an American writer who moves to Paris seeking a successful career, meets Satine, the leading performer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite the imminent danger of their relationship, fall madly in love and are forced into a concealed relationship with each other because of their lack of standing and power.

Ironically, the duration of La Belle Époque was criticized by even locals not as a period of advancement or development. Some people are of the opinion that this time period were all about overindulgence and abuse of the rich. the Broadway musical, however, chose to present the era in a more positive viewpoint by focusing on the romantic Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the show.

This October, theatre fans have the chance to relive the passion most likely also loved by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally vibrant and magnificent venue, Tennessee Performing Arts Center. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set that it is holding, Tennessee Performing Arts Center is the perfect fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Friday 11th October 2024.
