Set in the artistic period during the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily inspired by French history. The show can be found in and is focused on retelling the dealings of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, called the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 1900s, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became renowned for its French Cabaret cultural aspect – ecstatic, loose, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian venue that the show was based on also influenced the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the musical's team mentioning that they did take parts of the actual Bohemian time period, and it can undoubtedly be seen in the show. The decor, clothing, musical arrangements, and song and dance numbers (which showcases a lot of can-can dance) all evidently are a clear inspiration from to the original Moulin Rouge.

It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a duration considered to be the pinnacle of lasting peace and harmony, where the romantic story of two lovers take place. Christian, an American writer who journeys to Paris searching for a successful career, meets Satine, the finest performer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite many oncoming trials and tribulations, fall madly in love and settle for a secret affair with each other because of their uncontrollable feelings.

Contrary to other accounts, the time of La Belle Époque was criticized by many not as a time of peace and harmony. Some people are of the opinion that these years were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, however, chose to capture the era in a more favorable light by instead presenting the hopeful Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as perceived through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the show.

In more recent years, locals and tourists have the chance to be part of the passion most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally colorful and breathtaking venue, Tennessee Performing Arts Center. With interior decor just as sprightly as the set that it is staging, Tennessee Performing Arts Center is the best fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Friday 18th October 2024.
