A story of difficult love between an unlikely pair, Moulin Rouge! The Musical shares with us a tragic yet swoonworthy story in the equally romantic city of Paris, France. At the center of Montmartre, Christian, a motivated American writer who journeys in Paris with an aim to succeed in writing, stumbles upon the most beautiful woman he has seen and performer, Satine, in the famous club Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another jealous man sets his target on Satine as his woman.
Being a stage adaptation that was created more than 10 years after the original motion picture, this Broadway play's early challenge was to present an unfamiliar setting to a new generation. The masterful approach of the team, just like the previous film, was to present the tragic love story with alternate and fresh renditions of anachronistic pop arrangements. The next move was to supersize the musical numbers and truly transform the musical into a “a creative peek into the 1900s”, as the creators call it. The result, as watched on the Broadway stage, was an enormous collection of incredible medleys, mash-ups, and renditions.
